A crib mattress is one of the most important
items in any nursery if you consider how
much time your baby will spend sleeping on
it. Always leave enough room in your budget
to buy a good quality mattress. It will be
one of the best investments you make for
your baby’s health.
What to Look for When Choosing a Crib Mattress
FIRMNESS
All pediatricians now recommend that you
put your baby to sleep on as firm a mattress
as your budget will allow.
Features that contribute to overall mattress
firmness include:
Gauge of Steel
It’s not the number of coils that count but
the thickness of the wire. All of our innersprings
are made with adult grade tempered steel
wire which is strong and durable. Don’t be
fooled by high coil counts – the higher the
coil count, the thinner the wire used.
Border Rods
This steel wire which is attached to the
edges of the innerspring provides perimeter
firmness and overall durability which contributes
to longer mattress life. All of our innersprings
have a super thick border rod.
MATTRESS FIT
A mattress should fit snugly in your crib
so that there are no gaps which may become
an entrapment hazard. Although most mattresses
come in a standard size (approx. 70 cm x
132 cm or 27 ˝” x 52”), how well the mattress
fits depends on the design of your crib.
We recommend that you buy your crib and mattress
together so that you can test the mattress
fit before setting up your baby’s nursery.
Always make sure that there is not more than
a 2.5 cm (1”) gap between the mattress edge
and the crib rails or ends. Our mattresses
are designed with square corners for a snugger
fit that eliminate s the potential of baby
getting caught between the crib rail and
the mattresses.
PADDING
This typically includes polyurethane foam,
memory foam, cotton felt, polyester and fiber
pads. The main function of padding is to
provide surface comfort and eliminate the
“feel” of the coils. Regardless of the
type of padding in your mattress, over time
it will begin to conform to your baby’s body
shape and an “impression” or slight indentation
may appear in the surface of your mattress.
This in no way detracts from the performance
of the mattress as the “firmness” is provided
by the innerspring.
Turning the mattress regularly will help
reduce indentations.
SAFETY
Our vinyls are phthalate free and we use
only lead free low eco impact dyes. Vinyl
can be wiped clean with a damp cloth and
is completely waterproof. Vinyl is subject
to wear and tear with use and small cracks
and tears may occur. This is not unusual
especially when your child is old enough
to stand up in his crib. Jupiter Industries
provides a zippered replacement cover for
those customers whose mattress cover tears
while it is still under warranty. Extreme
cold will also cause vinyl to crack therefore
when storing your mattress please ensure
that you do not store it in an area where
the temperature could drop below freezing.
Do not allow your child to have access to
exposed filling materials as they could pose
a choking hazard if swallowed. Always keep
a tear covered or turn the torn side away
from your child until your replacement cover
arrives.
COILS
Don’t be fooled by high coil counts. The
higher the coil count, the thinner the wire
used. Our innersprings are made from the
same thick steel used in adult mattress innersprings
for better firmness and longer mattress life.
Our innersprings are made in a 5 turn construction
that is also the construction used in adult
mattresses. This gives the mattress more
resiliency and durability.
WARRANTY
Mattresses come with a wide range of warranties.
When selecting a mattress, keep in mind whether
you plan to use it for more than one child
or to transfer it to a toddler bed. In this
case, you should select a mattress with a
longer warranty period.
AGE & WEIGHT LIMITATIONS
Crib mattresses are intended for use by newborns
and toddlers. Generally, they are used in
a crib up to a maximum of 2 years of age
and in a toddler bed up to a maximum of 50
lbs.
